How to Parallel Park: Step-by-Step Guide for Vancouver Drivers

7 min read

Parallel parking is consistently rated as the most stressful driving skill for new drivers. But with the right technique and practice, it becomes second nature. Here's how to do it on Vancouver's streets.

The Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Find Your Spot

Look for a space that's at least 1.5 times the length of your car. In Vancouver, this is especially important on busy streets like Commercial Drive, Main Street, and West 4th Avenue.

Step 2: Signal and Position

  • Signal right to indicate you're parking
  • Pull up alongside the car in front of the space
  • Align your rear bumper with their rear bumper
  • Keep about 1 meter (3 feet) of space between the cars

Step 3: Check Your Surroundings

  • Check all mirrors
  • Check your blind spot
  • Make sure no cyclists are approaching (very important in Vancouver!)

Step 4: Begin Backing

  • Turn your steering wheel fully to the right
  • Slowly reverse into the space
  • Watch your right mirror — you should see the curb appearing

Step 5: Straighten Out

  • When your car is at about a 45-degree angle, straighten your wheels
  • Continue reversing slowly

Step 6: Final Adjustment

  • When your front bumper clears the rear bumper of the car in front, turn your wheel fully to the left
  • Continue reversing until you're parallel with the curb
  • Straighten your wheels and center yourself in the space

Common Mistakes

  1. Starting too far from the other car — Stay within 1 meter
  2. Turning the wheel too late — Start turning as soon as you begin reversing
  3. Not checking for cyclists — Always check before opening your door
  4. Rushing — Take your time, especially when learning

Vancouver Parking Tips

  • Many Vancouver streets have 2-hour parking limits — check the signs
  • Some areas require you to park within 30 cm of the curb
  • Watch for bike lanes when parallel parking — check before opening your door
  • Hill parking: Turn your wheels toward the curb when facing downhill, away from the curb when facing uphill
